Your BMW EV Questions, Answered!

Are you ready to take on the streets of Pekin and Dunlap in a new BMW electric vehicle—often called an EV—like the 2023 BMW i7, but you still have that little nagging feeling that you don’t know what you’re getting into? Let BMW of Peoria help with answers to your most common questions about EVs!

Yes, BMW EVs are safe. Since electric vehicles don’t have combustion engines, the safety issues around fire and gasoline are non-issues. When it comes to safety features, BMW EVs are equipped with the same safety and driver assist technology as gasoline models.

While more and more public charging stations are becoming available in the Galesburg area, it’s still best to have a Level 2 home charging station installed. This makes recharging your BMW EV so convenient—just plug in when you’re at home. You don’t have to monitor the charging. Many EV owners even charge their batteries overnight while they sleep.

Since EVs have far fewer moving parts than vehicles with combustion engines, your BMW EV won’t require motor oil. In fact, the time and money you spend on vehicle maintenance will both drop when you make the switch to an EV. You’ll still need tire rotations and brake inspections at the same intervals as a gas-powered vehicle.

No! Many people don’t buy EVs because of range anxiety—worrying that the number of miles they get per battery charge isn’t enough. All current BMW EVs get around 300 miles per charge. Just as higher-performing gasoline engines use more fuel, so do more powerful BMW M Series engines, so their battery range is usually closer to 250 miles. That said, the average American driver puts around 259 miles on their vehicle per week. BMW EV owners get three years of complimentary fast charging from Electrify America which will help on long road trips. They have chargers throughout the country and can add around 90 miles of driving power in a ten-minute charging session.

While the sticker price of an electric vehicle is almost always higher than that of a similar gas-powered model, in the long run to low cost of ownership of an EV balances much of the difference. Electricity costs much less than gasoline, and you might be eligible for federal or state tax breaks when you purchase an EV and charger. To lower the upfront costs you can find offers and incentives that include BMW EVs. Like-new certified pre-owned BMW EVs are starting to appear at dealerships at lower prices than new models too.
